It has been an interesting day in the car. I had my snow tires taken off last week thinking that if we did get more snow, it wouldn't stick on the pavement. So of course, we woke up this morning to a few inches of accumulation on the road resulting in a slushy mess.
This afternoon while on my way to a work related appointment, I had the wipers on, because it was precipitating a little and slush was getting kicked up on the windshield by the car in front of me. Suddenly the passenger side wiper flipped over and the clip that holds the blade in place went into orbit over the top of the car. I was in a rural area....no auto parts stores near by. My home is on the way to the appointment location, and I knew my husband was home. I stopped and got his car to continue on to the appointment.
After the appointment, I headed back toward home. On the way I pulled out and passed a U-haul truck with a U-haul trailer attached. About 8 miles later,as I approached a light at the outskirts of town, the U-haul caught up with me and pulled up on my right....the highway is two lanes each direction at that point. However, at the next light, the right lane has to turn right. The U-haul driver didn't want to turn right, so he put on his signal to move into my lane. I did not let him in for two reasons...one, I felt no particular obligation to let him in. Maybe he was from out-of-town and didn't realize he needed to move over until late in the game, but if I got caught like that, I would just wait until there was a break in the traffic and then move over. Secondly, because of the position of the U-haul relative to my car, I thought he would have more room to move over, if the car behind me let him in. As I moved forward through the intersection, he laid on the horn. I wasn't sure it was intended for me, until I looked in the rearview mirror and saw the accompanying hand gestures. Sigh.
He followed me for the next few blocks, and when I turned off on my street, he once again blared the horn as a parting shot. Nice guy. Of course, he probably thought I was rude or dumb, and I thought he was a jerk.
Later I got my car and went to an auto parts store to get a new wiper blade. When I came out of the parking lot, I needed to turn right and the traffic was stopped for the signal at the corner. I was perfectly content to wait my turn, but a driver backed up and waved me in.
So...was that supposed to make me feel guilty for not going out of my way to let the guy with the U-haul in? Is the contrast between me and "the nice guy" who let me in, or is the contrast between "the nice guy" and "the jerk" who assumed he could demand the right of way?
I don't plan to lose sleep over it.
